I’m from a small suburb called West Byfleet just outside of London in the UK. I don’t live there now — I got the hell out a long time ago — but I still got plenty of friends and family there. And I can tell you that none of them, without exception, have gone and got themselves a tattoo of the famed West Byfleet skyline, or of some other feature that shows that my little suburb in its greatest light. No-one’s gonna get the cricket pavilion or the Waitrose supermarket inked upon their thigh. Not unless they’re out of their mind, that is. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad place, and my childhood and teenage years were great there. But I’d be lying if I told you that West Byfleet stirred up as much passion as, say, any other damn place in the world. If only I was from somewhere where I could tattoo my city upon my body as a matter of pride. Here are some stunning city tattoos that sum up everything that West Byfleet is not and never will be;

I “Heart” New York

Yeah yeah we’ve all seen the “I love New York” t-shirts or baseball caps or coffee mugs or whatever. But what about the wrist tattoo? Nothing like a electrocardiogram line shaped like the City That Never Sleeps to get your heart racing for your hometown is there?

The Chrysler Building – NYC

Got a feeling that New York might play a major part in this skit, but that’s not intentionally so. Just so happens that New Yorkers have a crazy love for their city and like to show it in ink, that’s all. Like this dude and his Chrysler Building tat. Cool. Very very cool.

Melbourne, Australia

This is Melbourne, Australia, apparently. Honestly not 100% sure what the Scottish saltire is doing in the sunny Aussie skies above the city – a Scotsman living down there, perhaps? – but it makes for a pretty cool upper arm tattoo anyway. That’s a cool-ass moon too.

London

What I dig about this – apart from the subject, of course (London is close to my heart) – is the reflection of the skyline that you see here. The River Thames is the lifeblood of London, and although a brown sludge doesn’t make an exciting tattoo, the shimmering reflections of London’s landmarks more than portray what the piece is trying to convey.

London Again (Oh – And Paris!)

Who says you can’t commemorate two cities in one tattoo? If you live on one city and love in the other, or love in and and live in the other, why can’t they both become one? London and Paris complement each other very well, in real life as well as in the world of tattoos and ink that we inhabit here in this website. The balloons are sweet as well, are they not?

Denver Finger Tat

Nothing really remarkable about this tattoo except for the fact that it’s Denver. And I always like a nifty little finger tattoo. But if any of y’all didn’t know what the skyline looks like of the Mile High City, well now you do.

Seattle City Tattoos

Now this is a sweet one. A very original little piece celebrating the great city of Seattle, WA. Ah Seattle. Starbucks. Grunge. Microsoft. Hipsters. Grey’s Anatomy. None of those things are featured in this cityscape, but all are somehow implied. Or am I just projecting my own view of Seattle onto this chick’s foot?

Rio de Janeiro

Tasteful. Minimal. Understated. Discreet. All these words describe this simple line tattoo of Rio’s features – Christ The Redeemer, Sugarloaf Mountain, some, er, other bits and pieces – but fail spectacularly to describe the city itself. Rio is wild, maximal, overstated, and indiscreet. About the only thing that the city and this tattoo have in common is that they’re both damn sexy. Right? Smoking hot.

New York (again) City Tattoos

The sky color and the Rayban shades here scream more Miami or LA to me, if I’m honest. But NYC wins the day again as the home city of the coolest, most badass ink lovers wishing to celebrate their hometown. God knows we love you New York City (and so does every tattoo artist in the world).

Back to Paris…. (and back in time)

How cool is this guy? And how original is his tattoo? What you’re seeing here is a reproduction of a 1910 street map of the City of Light. That’s right. 1910 Paris. That’s way, way back in the day when tattoos were mostly Popeye-style anchors on sailors and not the sublime piece of art that you see above. Ten out of twn for originality here.

Victorian London City Tattoos

“Oi oi me old muckers! Put yer ‘at on and come with me up the apples and pears to the rub a dub dub!” Huh? What the hell is this guy talking about? Well, yeah, I was trying to sound like a Victorian street urchin – Oliver Twist if you will – but it doesn’t come off well online. It doesn’t come off at all online, actually. But you get the picture. Talking of pictures, check this out. A London street in the late 1800s. Like something from Sherlock Holmes isn’t it? I don’t know about you, but this is one of those tattoos that really gives the feel of the Big Smoke…

Chicago City Tattoos

Trust Chicago. Everyone else has some little line drawing of the skyline or features buildings or sites that sum up their city. But not Chicago. Not this guy. Why let people guess and take the risk of them getting it wrong? Why not just say it loud and proud and stamp the name of your city on your arm for all to see? That’s Chicago for you. My kind of town.

Portland, Oregon

Portland, Oregon. Home of the hipster. And what could be more hipster than this nifty little foot tattoo? It’s the tree that does it. There’s plenty of other skyline tats out there celebrating their specific cities, but only a Portlander would add a tree to theirs. That’s just Portland for you.

Boston

I’m loving this! About the most original one so far I think. A fantastic design and a great tribute to a great city. The heart hovering over the skyline like a star just adds to the tribute. A gorgeous tattoo.

Oklahoma City

Now here’s a way to pay tribute to your city – just take a photograph out of your apartment window (this only works if you have a view, by the way. If your place looks out over trash cans across to a brick wall across the alley then this won’t really work), take it to your friendly neighborhood tattooist, and let him get to work. That’s what this chick did and she now forever has a reminder of her personal piece of paradise that is Oklahoma City.

San Francisco

I think that this one has a story behind it, apart from commemorating one of the best cities on the planet. The red balloon is the clue. Maybe this guy lost a love in San Francisco or something like that… I’d love to know the meaning of that balloon, which adds a poignant touch to the whole thing. Sentiments aside, this is damn cool city tat as well.

Cape Town

Ha! I’m guess that a few people won’t get this one. Hell, I wouldn’t get this one unless I wasn’t searching through the interwebs for cool tattoos that represent cities around the world. To the average laymen (or to anyone who doesn’t live there), this is just some line or other. Some hippy symbol or whatever. Meh. But actually, it’s a pretty cool image of Table Mountain, the symbol of Cape Town, South Africa, and a source of pride to all who live there. If you’re from Cape Town, you know exactly what this tattoo means.

New York (yet again)

I keep trying and trying to steer away from New York. I keep trying and trying to find other cities. But it’s so hard. New Yorkers have the best tattoos of New York. I’m sorry, but they. I keep searching and all I keep seeing are NYC tattoos, so if ya can’t beat ’em join ’em. Check out this bad boy right here. Awesome. Absolutely New York awesome.

Berlin

Now here’s something that equals any New York City tattoo, coming straight out of Berlin, Germany. This is actually pretty damn spectacular. Love love love the clouds behind the Berlin TV Tower.

Hong Kong

Here’s another candidate for greatness in this genre here. Loving the colors in this piece. Super feminine and pretty sexy. That boat in the front totally sums up Hong Kong as well. This is absolutely a tattoo to be proud of no matter where you’re from.
